I Have a Question

I can't remember which section it is in, but I remember reading about the second coming of Christ in Doctrine & Covenants. It is the section when Joseph Smith asks Christ, ¨When are you coming to the earth for the second coming?¨ He doesn't really give him an answer until the third time Joseph asks and He responds with ¨look if you live to be 85, you will see my coming.¨ Just a thought, what do you think about that scripture? I never gave it much thought, but I was talking about it with my branch president yesterday and we came to a very interesting conclusion, but first I want to see what you think.

This was a question posed by Elder Hackleman to his mom. The Section he is referring to is:

Doctrine and Covenants Section 130:

14 I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following:

15 Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter.

16 I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face.

17 I believe the coming of the Son of Man will not be any sooner than that time.

Answer Quoted from:

Question: Did Joseph Smith prophesy that Jesus Christ would return in 1890?
Jesus Christ stated that no mortals or angels would know when He would return

It is important to realize that while Jesus Christ resided on the earth he stated that no mortals or angels would know when He would return:

But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only" (Matthew 24:36).

Because we do not know, we need to constantly be ready for his return, for "in such an hour as ye think not the Son of Man cometh" (Matthew 24:44).
In February 1835, Joseph Smith is reported to have said that "fifty-six years should wind up the scene"

Joseph Smith did make several interesting statements about seeing the Savior. B.H. Roberts in History of the Church notes the Prophet's remark in 1835 when he is reported to have said that,

...it was the will of God that those who went Zion, with a determination to lay down their lives, if necessary, should be ordained to the ministry, and go forth to prune the vineyard for the last time, or the coming of the Lord, which was nigh—even fifty-six years should wind up the scene.[1]

In Feb 1835, fifty six years in the future was February 1891. This would be shortly after Joseph's 85th birthday (he was born 23 December 1805).

Joseph made continuous reference to this date in light of a revelation which he reported. It is recorded in D&C 130:14-17, and it is clear that the revelation leaves the exact date of Christ's second coming much more uncertain. Whatever Joseph meant or understood by "wind up the scene," it must be interpreted in light of the revelation as he reported it, and the conclusions which he drew from it.

This particular revelation is a favorite of anti-Mormon critics. They have misquoted it, misreported it, misinterpreted it and misexplained it. Most often they simply do not complete the quote, making it appear that the Prophet said something he didn't.
Joseph acknowledged as he recorded this revelation that he didn't understand its meaning or intent

The revelation is reported in abbreviated form, and Joseph acknowledged as he recorded it that he didn't understand its meaning or intent:

I was once praying very earnestly to know the time of the coming of the Son of Man, when I heard a voice repeat the following: Joseph, my son, if thou livest until thou art eighty-five years old, thou shalt see the face of the Son of Man; therefore let this suffice, and trouble me no more on this matter. (D&C 130:14-15).

Many critics end the quote at this point, and then they hope the reader will assume that the statement is a prophecy that the Savior would come in the year 1890 or 1891, since the Prophet Joseph was born in 1805. (Other critics do not even bother to cited D&C 130, and simply rely on the quote from the Kirtland Council Minute Book of 1835, reproduced in History of the Church.)
Joseph expresses his uncertainty: "I believe the coming of the Son of Man will not be any sooner than that time"

However, if the reader will continue further in that passage, they will see how Joseph Smith himself understood the revelation, unfiltered through note-takers or critics who wish to explain his meaning:

I was left thus, without being able to decide whether this coming referred to the beginning of the millennium or to some previous appearing, or whether I should die and thus see his face (D&C :130).

The actual content of Joseph's prophecy--if personal opinion can be said to be prophecy--does not occur until the next verse:

I believe the coming of the Son of Man will not be any sooner than that time.(D&C 130:17.)

Without a doubt, Joseph's belief proved correct. The Lord did not return to the earth for His Second Coming before that time.

At least twice, as is recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants, Joseph saw the face of the Son of Man

But there are other aspects of fulfillment that should also be considered. We do not know when it was that the Prophet earnestly prayed to know the time of the Lord's coming. The context, (verse 13), shows that it may have taken place in 1832 or earlier. At least twice, as is recorded in the Doctrine and Covenants, Joseph saw the face of the Son of Man. D&C 76:20-24 and D&C 110:2-10 both record appearances of the Lord Jesus Christ, either of which may constitute fulfillment of the Lord's prophetic promise. He may also have seen the Lord's face at the time of his death in 1844, as he pondered in D&C 130:16.

Joseph made reference to the incident on at least two other occasions, and indicated that his belief was not that the Lord would come by the time of his 85th birthday, but rather that the Lord would not come before that time, which of course was a correct prophecy.

In the History of the Church:

I prophesy in the name of the Lord God, and let it be written--the Son of Man will not come in the clouds of heaven till I am eighty-five years old.[2]

Again, Joseph Smith doesn't say the Lord will come then, but that He will not come before that time. The return to his age 85 shows that all these remarks derive from the same interpretation of his somewhat opaque revelation from the Lord, who seems determined to tell his curious prophet nothing further.

Joseph denies that anyone knows an exact date

Later, Joseph Smith again prophesied on the subject of Christ's coming:

I also prophesy, in the name of the Lord, that Christ will not come in forty years; and if God ever spoke by my mouth, He will not come in that length of time. Brethren, when you go home, write this down, that it may be remembered. Jesus Christ never did reveal to any man the precise time that He would come. Go and read the scriptures, and you cannot find anything that specifies the exact hour He would come; and all that say so are false teachers.[3]

This remark was made on 10 March 1844. It echoes a teaching given through Joseph in the Doctrine and Covenants in March 1831:

And they have done unto the Son of Man even as they listed; and he has taken his power on the right hand of his glory, and now reigneth in the heavens, and will reign till he descends on the earth to put all enemies under his feet, which time is nigh at hand—I, the Lord God, have spoken it; but the hour and the day no man knoweth, neither the angels in heaven, nor shall they know until he comes. (D&C 49:6-7, emphasis added)

Thus, from the beginning to the end of his ministry, Joseph Smith denied that a man could or would know the date of the second coming of Christ. (Joseph's remarks may have been instigated by the intense interest among religious believers in William Miller's prophecy that Christ would return by 1843.)

Photos from Mexico 2-23-2015

Our branch president has a pretty good size bee's nest outside his house. Apparently it is good luck here, so he doesn't remove it. Ha ha

We got to ride in the back of the branch president's truck because he lives about 45 minutes from the town we live in. He gave us a ride one day so we wouldn't have to pay for a bus ticket. It was awesome! For the first time, I felt the wind blow threw my hair. I couldn't ever say that before, because I didn't have hair! It is a great sensation. It reminded me of sitting in the front of uncle Jeff´s boat talking to uncle Joe, and trying not to fall over as uncle Jeff hit the wakes of other boats to freak grandma out, (the roads here are very bumpy). Haha

I'm not sure why but I absolutely love the new Ruffles package.
And look! They even give you 19% more Potatoes!

The sister in the branch who took us up to the mountains and stuff last week, this is her car. We put some cool decals on it. She wanted it in English haha!

We made Mole today for p-day

This is a sauce that is very very popular in this part of Mexico. They put it over, yep you guessed it, chicken. I will tell you everything that is in this sauce. I'm pretty sure the person who created Mole, made it the same way the Beatles wrote the song Yellow Submarine, if you know what I mean. Literally everything and the kitchen sink is basically thrown into a giant food processor and then boiled down into a sauce. I was able to pick out these different ingredients, but I know there is more that I don't know about.

Peppers, I can't remember what the name of the pepper is. I haven't ever seen it in the us, bananas, animal crackers, sesame seeds, onion, tomato, garlic, peanuts, almonds, cashews, chocolate, and about 4 or 5 other things.

I actually really like Mole, but it definitely is different. Most gringos throw up, but I have eaten it so much I like it. I never thought it was gross, just very very different. I can't even explain the flavor.

You put all that stuff in this giant machine. It is basically a giant food processor.

And it comes out looking like this.

Hey mom! Yeah thanks for the English tip. I know I need it haha. I could blame it on the keyboard, but to be honest, I'm just flat forgetting English.

Anyways tell Nathan to be careful with those teeth. and congrats on 2nd place!!!! That is awesome!!!! I wish I could watch him! I always loved show choir! I regret not doing it, even though I couldn't with my clanking shoulder.

Grant, keep working on those basketball skills buddy! Maybe that could be your sport!!!!! Nathan is a stud at it, so keep practicing with him. I know you won't ever be as tall as me, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

So grandma Polly is coming? For a month? You guys will have to go to the Zoo a lot for me! Man I miss those days! I was telling my comp about how we had a season pass and we would go every day after school sense I couldn't do anything else with my shoulder in a sling, and he was like, What didn't you get bored? I was like freak no! It was great! Just me and my mommie! Anyways I'm proud of you with your school teaching!!!! I totally use so many of your teaching things in lessons here it isn't even funny. Oh, did coach Olsen know I am serving a mission? I don't think I ever told him. And why hasn't Mrs Reinsche ever emailed me back??! haha oh well.

Ok I want to tell you about the new movie Meet The Mormons. President Córdova got a copy early before it came out and we watched it at our zone conference last week. It is sooo good!!! I am not going to tell you what happens, but I will say pay close attention to the wife of the couple in Costa Rica, and just remember what she does for a living for when I get home from my mission. remember she is an active member in the church!

Really though it was a great movie. It did make me a little trunky though when it showed a part about the Navy football team. After the movie ended, President Cordova got up and asked me if I had my scholarship planned with that team after my mission haha.

Hey I have some homework for you. I can't remember which section it is in, but I remember reading about the second coming of Christ in the Doctrine and Covenants. It is the section when Joseph Smith asks Christ basically ¨so when are you coming¨ and he doesn't really give him and answer until the third time Joseph asks and He responds with ¨look if you live to be 85, you will see my coming.¨ Just a thought, what do you think about that scripture? I never gave it much thought, but I was talking about it with my branch president yesterday and we came to a very interesting conclusion, but first I want to see what you think:)

That is about all for now! I will send you a couple pictures. I don't have too many this time.

Love you mom! Thanks for everything!

Dad you are seriously the best. I was thinking about it this week and I really have never showed enough gratitude to you and mom for all that you guys do. You have always worked so hard to support the family. We never have been rich, but we have never lacked or been without. I love you so much. I found this scripture that I want you to read. 1 Corinthians 1:4 (I hope that is how you spell it in English).

Love Elder Hackleman

I absolutely love life here!

There is a giant statue of the Virgin Maria that overlooks the city of Huatusco.
It stands over 900 feet tall.
In English we say Virgin Mary.

I liked this mountain because it looks like a volcano.

This is out the back end. Way off in the distance is Veracruz. We are hundreds of miles away, but you can still barely see the city when you go up on the mountain top on a clear day. You probably can't in this picture though.

More pictures taken during my hike up the mountain near the city of Huatusco.

I tried out the panoramic view on my camera.

The tall white building in the middle is our apartments.
We live in the best housing in town.

We also went hiking on some trails and found a cool little lagoon! It is very pretty! Apparently there are tons of rumors about this lagoon. Stuff like a giant 80 foot anaconda that lives there and crocodiles and stuff haha. There are 2 giant crosses nearby because apparently 2 guys from the US came down to try and clean up this lagoon and they were never found again. The people here built crosses to remember them. I don’t have pictures of the crosses but everything else I will send! It is all pretty cool!

This is the sister who drove us up there.
She is super awesome.

Us hiking on the trail.

I took this while on the trail.

Apparently there are tons of rumors about this lagoon. Stuff like a giant 80 foot anaconda that lives there and crocodiles and stuff haha.

So in answer to your question, yes and no. I can’t remember which mountain you are talking about but we did go up “A” mountain today haha. I will send pictures of everything because I took quite a few. One of them is a panoramic picture of all of Huatusco! I hope you can see it pretty well because it is pretty awesome lol. Is Nathan in Titanium???? Is Nick still in it too?

We have this family in the ward and the son is 16 and is EXACTLY like Nick. It’s ridiculous, except he doesn't speak English haha.

Tell grant I have grown 4 inches since I left so good luck passing me up now! (I haven’t really but just tell him that. I don’t want him to have any hope of growing taller than me.) You are a busy mom! For the first time in your life you are running around trying to make it to all of your sons’ activities, Nathan’s show choir, Grant’s basketball... clank. Oh wait, you have been doing that your whole life! It’s not like we have ever had more than one football game going on before right? haha.

That doesn't surprise me at all by the way, about Pathways.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is so awesome:) you have always been such a hard worker!

I’m absolutely loving life here!

Anyways thanks for everything mommy! I will send some pictures now!

Elder Hackleman

Email sent earlier in the day.

Hey mom, once again I have a favor if you have time. Every Tuesday we go to Cordoba for district class. We have to use a bus and always get their about half an hour early. They have a piano there. We don’t have one in our little house of worship and I want to learn some new songs. I love Sally Deford music and since it is free, I was wondering if you could email me one or two of them? I can print them off here. I really want a cool version of, “If you could Hie to Kolab.” Thanks! I’ll be back on at 4:30 for my regular email time.

If You Could Hie to Kolob.

Thank you for the music!
I’m going to print it out and give it a try!!

Congratulations to my good friend back in the USA who got baptized on Saturday. I am thinking of you!

Oh and thanks for the Celsius Fahrenheit scale. I used to know it, but now, if it doesn't involve the restoration or the plan of salvation, I probably won’t remember haha and pesos, those are about 13-1. It is constantly changing but approximately 13 pesos is equal to 1 dollar. Anyways thanks for everything mommy! I will send some pictures now!

I have the best Grandpa Ever!

My Graduation picture with my wonderful Grandparents

Just so you know, I get my sense of humor from my grandpa. Here is the email he sent me this week:

Dear Elder,

I've been seeing some of your recent pictures and have some grave concerns. Your weight loss is troubling and the UNP coach is really concerned. Those nose guards will throw you like a half full sack of Idaho potatoes. He is aware that making you a receiver is not an option. I'm wondering if all that energy you're expending growing hair could be the cause. I know that Samson got his strength from his long hair, but perhaps it works differently with Mormon missionaries. This is a topic you should discuss with your mission president. While you're talking with him you can mention that Straight No Chaser is going to be in Fort Collins and that you want a weekend pass to attend.

Hope all is well. Love you. Gramps

Huatusco, Mexico Mission Pictures

This picture was taken from the window of our apartment. We live at the top of the city and it looks out over Huatusco.

This is a cool park we have right next to our apartment.
It was really foggy one day so I thought it would be a cool picture.

Me by the window of our apartment today right before we went to get our hair cut.

We found this guy to cut our hair. He was super nice and cut it for free because he thought what we do was so cool. I told him we have to have a line in our hair where we part it, but otherwise he could cut it however he wanted. He actually shaved a line into my head. Not sure if you can see it but it was kind of funny. I can't complain because it was free. This is how all of the pro soccer players have their hair, haha.

Maybe you can see it better with this one.
(Side Note From Mom: I saw the soda bottle in the background of this picture and asked if he was drinking coke.  On his mission it is against the rules.  He said, "Heck no, I would never break mission rules. The only mission rule is we can't have coke or pepsi, that is... I don't know what its called in English haha. Here in Mexico it is called apple soda. It is very popular and delicious.")

I took this picture from the bus window so it might be a little blurry. Sorry.

Picture taken from the bus window.

The branch president owns a tortilla shop and this is the name of it. I thought it quite the coincidence that he named it after the Urim and Thummim, (that is how it is spelled in Spanish.)

Here I am with Elder Charlton and Elder Jones, (they were comps in the MTC and both love Jaren.) Elder Charlton is the zone leader of Orisaba which borders my zone. Our zones got together to listen to the President area Elder De Hoyes talk.
Elder Jones is in my zone. They wanted me to tell you hi Jaren!!!!

So here I am with Jaren's buddy from the MTC, Elder Charlton. This was when I first got to Mexico and he was in the mission offices. This guy is awesome. I totally love him.

This is the receipt for my laundry. I told them my name was Elder Hackleman and this is how they spelled it. Very close haha.

Another Roof Top Picture

Next Monday we are going to the top of this mountain with some members. I can't wait!

More pictures from our roof.

This little guy is called a mega torta. The other day, the member we were supposed to eat with forgot so they just gave us some money to buy something. We got these. They are stuffed with about every kind of meat imaginable. I have never been so full in my life and they were only like 50 pesos (less than 5 bucks).

Oh it is absolutely amazing, but so filling.
I actually saved the meat that fell out and fried it with some scrambled eggs this morning.
Not bragging or anything but could have been one of my better ideas ever.

This is my laundry bag.
It ripped so I decided to teach myself how to sew.
I think it looks pretty amazing personally.
(See Grant's thoughts about Seth's sewing on Jaren's blog.)

We don't have a church, we have what is called una casa de oracion or a prayer house. Here is our chapel!

This is the Cultural Hall

The Primary Room

Here is my little buddy I found on the side of the road by our house. I wonder if it's a relative to the cow I'm buying back at Uncle Daniels to help fund my mission?

My New Companion

Elder Hackleman and Elder Vega, new Companionship

Dear Elder S. Hackleman,

Nathan didn't end up getting his wisdom teeth taken out on Friday. He went to seminary and while there he forgot and ate a cookie. Because of this they had to postpone the surgery. No food after midnight, not even a little cookie. He was so bummed. He ended up having to go to school. Everyone was wondering why he was there. He finally told a teacher he was there because a cookie just jumped in his mouth and before he knew what was happening it was going down his throat. They all had a good laugh. He is scheduled for wisdom teeth surgery a week from today. Now he is probably going to have to miss two days of school since he won't have the weekend to recover, but we couldn't do it on a Friday because he has show choir performances every weekend from here on out for the next couple of months.

Saturday night he had a little party with some friends over. They watched "The Maze Runner."

Hey mom!

Tell Nathan that I HATE IT when those darn cookies just climb into my mouth. Drives me crazy. Clanking cookies. The Maze Runner is out??? I didn't even know! Is it good??? Isn't that the one you and I read the whole trilogy one day in Sidney when I was sick and couldn't go to school??? haha good times.

I cant believe Grant is getting so tall. Make sure you tell him he isn't allowed to pass me up. Not possible though, Nathan has been trying for what, 15 years now? and he still hasn't.  (Side note from mom, Nathan is in fact taller than his brother Elder Hackleman so this is just a sarcastic sentence.  You have to know Elder Hackleman's humor).

I would pay some serious pesos to have some snow here! Actually the weather here in my new area is incredible. It's pretty hot today but nothing like my last area! In Celsius its like 28, so in Fahrenheit I think it is about 80 degrees. (Side note 28 degree Celsius = 82.4 degree Fahrenheit). It's not super hot but the sun is very bright. The nice thing is I sleep absolutely amazing every single night because it actually cools off here! Even when its hot during the day, it cools off at night.

This email is going to be a little shorter than normal because I have a bunch of pictures and stuff I want to send you so I want to make sure I have enough time to do that.

About my companion, I absolutely love him. His name is Elder Vega.  He is from a state here in Mexico that is just a little more north than Mexico City. It is famous for it´s mummies and tombs and stuff so whenever he tells somebody where he is from they always make comments about that haha. It is kind of weird not to have a companion that is skinnier than my leg, but he is totally great.  He knows about 20 words in English haha. So here is something funny, he is the second of 4 brothers, and his older brother just happened to serve a mission in Peru. We also both happen to have a prom date who is now serving in Argentina on a mission.  They don't call it prom here, but it is the same thing. Crazy right? haha.

The week has been going great! We haven't taught very many lessons because a ton of people are out of town.  They went to the port, or the city of Veracruz, to Carnival, but this week we have some good dates lined up so we will work extra hard to make up for it.

This town of Huatusco is very relaxed haha. There were always drunk people everywhere in Carrillo but here it is very chill.

I can't remember if I told you that I am teaching myself how to speak Maya? I have a Book of Mormon in Mayan so I read it in English, Spanish and Maya every morning. I am trying to memorize scriptures in Maya but it is pretty hard so I only have one memorized really well right now.  It is 1 Nephi 5:3.  In Maya it says ¨Bey tún úchic in ma´ma´ u taqui´c u pól in tatao´.¨ Look it up in English haha. (Side note, very funny Elder S. Hackleman, "And after this manner of language had my mother complained against my father.")

Thank you for the recipe of the brownies. A couple of the sisters here in the branch have husbands who are working in the US and they told their wives about these brownie things. They really want to learn how to make them so I told them if they teach me how to make something Mexican, I will teach them how to make my mom´s world famous brownies haha. We are going to make a branch activity out of it haha. So thanks for that!

We have a tiny little branch. We had a pretty good number show up to church on Sunday though! I think there was about 28!

Anyways that is about it for me. I´ll send you a bunch of pictures though. I love you! Thank you for everything!!!! Tell the family te amo mucho para mi.
